The history boys

Long before I started writing about photography, I remember reading a feature in a Saturday supplement about the legendary photojournalist Jürgen Schadeberg, who captured the jazz scene in South Africa during the Apartheid years. The feature left a big impression on me and years later I couldn’t believe my luck when I got the chance to interview him for Professional Photographer magazine. Jürgen is known as the ‘father of South African photography’ for his pioneering work on Drum magazine. The stories he told me were deeply moving; I have nothing but respect for his courage and talent.
